Journeys
A journey is what people do in order: the page they arrive on, the page after it, the event after that. Where a funnel asks how many reached steps you name in advance, the Journeys page shows the steps people actually took, so you find the paths you would not have thought to ask about.
Journeys are drawn as a flow. Each column is a step, each block a page or an event, as tall as the visits that reached it, and the bands between columns show how many went from one to the next. Pointing at a block or a band shows its numbers; a table of the same numbers is one click away, under Table, and on a phone the steps are listed one under another.
Visits and steps
- A visit is one visitor's activity until 30 minutes pass with nothing. The next step after that starts a new visit. A visit is counted in the range by its first step.
- A step is a page view, named by its path such as
/pricing, or any other event, named by its event name such assignup. For an extension, every step is an event. - Repeats merge. Reloading a page, or sending the same event twice in a row, is one step.
- Pages only, on a website, leaves the events out and shows pages alone.
Each column shows its six most common steps and Other for the rest, and says how many visits ended there.
From entry
The first step of each visit, then the four after it. It answers how people arrive and where they go next.
A recipe site sees most visits start on / and a third of those go on to /recipes/lemon-pasta, while visits that start on /blog/knife-skills mostly end there. The blog post brings people in, and sends few of them anywhere.
After a step
Choose a step, or a goal, and see what visits did after the first time they reached it. It answers what people do next.
A website picks /pricing. The next column shows /signup for some, /docs/guide/install-web for others, and many ending at pricing. If the docs column is large, people want to know how it works before they sign up.
An extension picks popup_opened. The next column shows settings_opened and export_started, and how many closed the popup without doing anything, step by step.
Before a step
Choose a step or a goal, and see the steps that led to the first time a visit reached it, read backwards: the last column is your step, the one before it what came just before, and so on. It answers what leads to it.
A website picks its Signed up goal. The columns before it show which pages people read on the way, such as /pricing then /signup, or an article, then the home page, then signup.
Following a path
Clicking a block chooses it: the columns after it (before it, reading backwards) then count only the visits that went through it. Choose another block in the next column to follow the path further. Clear choices starts again.
What is not shown
A block, a band, Other or an "ended here" reached by fewer than 5 visits is not shown, so nobody can be singled out on a small site. A step under 5 is counted in Other; a band under 5 is counted in the band to Other. Journeys are counted from the raw events, which are kept for 90 days, so a longer range counts its last 90 days and says so.
Journeys can also be asked for by an AI assistant, as get_journeys: see the MCP tools.
